FAQ:

How often should the septic tank be pumped?

Every 2-3 years, or when sludge in the tank is approaching the 1/3 full mark.  Regular cleaning and maintenance will increase the life span of the system.

Can I clean and maintain the septic system myself?

During the decomposition of human waste, lethal gases build up in the tank that may be deadly.  For regular maintenance or to correct a problem, call a professional.

What can I do to reduce potential problems with my septic system?

Your septic system will work more efficiently if you:

1.  Reduce the amount of  grease, fats, coffee grinds, cigarette  butts, diapers, paper tissues/towels, and food particles from entering the septic tank.

2.  Spread out washing clothes to several times a week, instead of all at one time.

3.  Keep trees and their root systems away from the tank and the drain field.

4.  Use moderate amounts of bleaches, cleansers, and other household products.  Too much of these products will inhibit the natural decomposition process in the septic tank.

5.  Use specifically recommended white toilet paper for septic tank use.  There are no dyes to break down in white paper.

What are the warning signs to impending septic system problems?

1.  Yellow grass or smelly water standing over the septic tank or drain field.

2.  Slow draining sinks or tubs.

3.  Gurgling sounds in sink or tub.

Are permits required to install or repair septic systems?

Yes, all repairs, replacements, and installations must meet Pennsylvania Environmental Codes.  A SEO (Sewage Enforcement Officer) must inspect any work that is done.
